Summer Finds from Makers we're Excited to Meet at Urban Air Market

Daisy McClellanComment

One of the things we miss the most about our old Hayes Valley home is Urban Air Market (UAM). We opened our doors for the first time back in 2014 the day of their Spring Hayes Valley market. Every since then we always got excited every time the market came to the neighborhood. We loved having so many of our makers selling their wares outside our doors for the day and then discovering new artists to feature in the shop. The wonderful thing about our new location in Oakland is that UAM pops up at the Hive not too far away. Their next market is Sunday July 21st and we can’t wait to do a little summer shopping. We’ve stalked the vendor list and compiled our favorite finds perfect for enjoying this summer. All the items are from makers new to us that we can’t wait to meet. Will we see you there?

We can’t wait to try on the Knot Everyday Shirt by Amy Kuschel. We love that this collection is manufactured locally and features flattering lines and high quality fabrics. We especially like the playful Liberty London print use for this button down and could see ourselves reaching for it all summer long.

We’ve got sandals on the mind with our new Sandal Making Workshop coming up in September. These Ridge Slides by AFTERNOON look buttery soft and like they would go with everything from jean cut offs to a flowy floral dress. All their shoes are inspired by the California landscape, with a minimalist silhouette and a commitment to sustainable materials and ethical production. What could be better?

UAM Korina.jpg

We’re always on the lookout for non-toxic products that are safe and effective so to keep our skin vibrant and hydrated we’re excited to try Korina’s body oils. We’re especially interested in their summer sent, Neroli and Bergamont which has botanical ingredients like jojoba, sweet almond and fractionated coconut oil to moisturize dry skin without leaving a greasy feeling.

uam atelierprelude.jpg

The Abeline Dress by Atelier Prelude seems like the perfect summer staple. Wear it to work, on a picnic, or even spice it up with statement shoes and jewels for an outdoor wedding. We love the retro inspired cut and ease of this dress. Their commitment to sustainability wants to make us invest in their romantic pieces.

This year we’re making a big effort to stop using so many paper towels so we’ve been on the lookout for nice durable napkins. These gingham ones by Isafix scream summer and we’d love to pick up a set at the market. We love that they used reclaimed textiles and are based right here in Oakland.

Join us Sunday May 6th at 11a for our new Image Transfer onto Glass Workshop with Chelsea Hiatt Farley of Cuppa Fog. For this workshop she will teach you how to transfer images onto glass! You will go home with 4 glass pieces that can be used as coasters or hung on a wall or in a window. This same technique can be used to transfer images onto mirrors.

In this class, Chelsea will teach you: Glass preparation, image transfer application, removal of paper, finishing techniques, sealant method, and how to apply hardware onto the back of your new art.

Image Transfer onto Glass Workshop Includes:

-Four square (4 inch x 4 inch) glass transfers (two images you will complete in class, and the other two you will start in class and take home to finish)

-Vintage-themed San Francisco photos or 4 of your own images*

-All art materials and finishing hardware

*If you use our provided vintage-themed San Francisco photos the cost is $75, but if you'd like to customize it more you can use your own photos for $90. If you are using your own photos we recommend choosing good contrast and high resolution digital files (minimum of 1MB, please do not pull off of social media sites as they are too compressed). We advise you to stay away from portraits (people or animal), as they are tougher to make sure the distressing doesn’t happen over important parts like faces. Please email pictures to hello@gathersf.com by Tuesday May 2nd.

Chelsea Hiatt Farley has made a business of transferring her photos on to wood with her company Cuppa Fog for the past 6 years and her Image Transfer to Wood Workshop is one of our most popular classes at gather. We carry her beautiful San Francisco-themed pieces in the shop. She is constantly inspired taking photos of our beautiful San Francisco and the coast, and loves how the image transfer process brings additional texture and storytelling to her photographs.

This two hour class also includes mimosas and snacks and a discount on merchandise in the store that day. No experience needed- all levels welcome!

Registration closes at midnight on Wednesday May 2nd for custom pictures ($90) and Saturday May 5th for SF themed option ($75).

Pop Up with Steep Tea Co (and Urban Air Market) Recap!

Daisy McClellanComment

Thanks so much for everyone who visited us during Urban Air Market yesterday. We loved hosting a little Pop Up out front of our shop with the lovely ladies from Steep Tea Co! That morning they reached their $20,000 Kickstarter goal to retrofit an  jeep truck to sell their teas at events all over the bay! We hope you were able to snag a cup of their yummy hot or iced tea!

We also set up a sampling of what we offer in the store at our favorite local salon's booth, Taylor Monroe. Thanks for the love guys! Christian and I even had some time to say hi to our vendors who we're sprinkled all through the market. We'll be restocking lots of them this week so be sure to stop in and check out new goods from your favorite local artists. We also peeped some new talent that we hope to bring in before the holidays! Enjoy some pictures from the day!

A bit more about the panelists:

Daisy and Christian (that's us!)- gather

Husband and wife team Christian & Daisy opened their shop, gather, in 2014 in Hayes Valley. Daisy is a jewelry designer who sells her designs online and in various boutiques around the country and Christian’s background is in providing legal advice to small businesses. Combining their unique experiences and skills and embarking on a new journey, they are now living their dream of owning a brick and mortar store in the heart of San Francisco to sell their goods as well as the goods of other local and indie artists.

Jonathan- heliotrope

JP is an alchemist, a dog lover, a porketarian, a grammarian, a martini aficionado, and Nice Jewish Boy from The Bronx. He’s worked for Bay Area retailers for over 25 years, including Williams-Sonoma/Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Good Vibrations, and Bare Essentials. He co-founded Heliotrope five years ago.

Jenn- local take

Jenn co-owns Local Take with Kyra, who she had often shared a festival booth with to sell her own designs in the past. They worked so well together that they decided it was time to open their own brick and mortar store. Jenn and Kyra chose the Castro for their business as it lacked a main retail source for independently designed and crafted personal items and gifts. Local Take now showcases over 130 independent designers and artists, helping them gain public recognition to jumpstart their careers.

About the Moderator:
